Life and Credit : Cost Cutting Close to Home

No one goes out to buy a big ticket item – like a car, a TV, or tiles for your kitchen floor – without looking around for the best deal, right? So, why don’t we do the same exercise with daily expenses, like food? Too time consuming? Consider this: You annual grocery bill far exceeds most purchases you will make in a year. Doing your homework and clipping coupons from the Sunday paper can save you hundreds of dollars annually.

The first step is getting your household budget in order. Do you know how much you spend on things you consume on a daily basis? Once you sit down and figure that out, you might be surprised to discover where your money is going. Reducing your expenses is one of the quickest, easiest ways to improve your financial situation.

If you need a little direction, talk to a Financial Specialist at Credit Counselors. Here are some of the things you might learn:

Sign on the dotted line. Promise yourself that you are going to put a little effort into comparison shopping.

How much is it really worth? Try to think about what something will cost you in the long run. Remember the printer you bought that was a real bargain, until it came time to replace the toner cartridge? Sometimes the least costly item isn’t the best deal. Apply the same idea to your diet. Fast food may be cheap and easy, but you can eat more (to say nothing about health) by spending that same amount on groceries for a meal you cook at home.

Google it. Researching deals has never been easier. There is a wealth of information out there. Avoid those pedaling products and services and check out blogs and message boards.

Just do it. Hit the bricks and patrol store shelves. Reconnaissance is key. You’ll soon learn how retailers place the premium-priced items at eye level, or mine the shelves with costly distractions. Focus and stick to your list.

Everything old is new again. When you do need to invest in a big-ticket item, look around to see if it is available used. Or, check to see if older models are being discounted when new ones have been introduced.

Ask for a deal. Competition is fierce out there, so when negotiate.
